Match-tip tiny, Brookesia micra is a new chameleon species found on Madagascar. With an average adult length of just over an inch from snout to tail, B. micra is among the tiniest reptiles in the world.

Scientists think the diminutive new chameleon species might represent extreme cases of island dwarfism, whereby organisms shrink in size due to limited resources on islands.

From there, the waters go north trough the rivers Sacre, Papagaio, Jurema, Tapajós until finally reaching the Amazon River. This dive site is near the city Campo Novo Do Parecis, and I had some help from my friends Rogério Perdigão e Jadilson Luis Souza. Verde in Portuguese means green; witch is the river water’s color. Despite the green tonality the water can be reasonable clear. The dive is done on a “U”-shaped branch of the river that may be near 1900m in length. At the end of the dive we had to walk trough a short trail in order to get back to the starting point. The dive path has some interceptions and one should take care not to pass the ending point of the dive. As such is recommended that the dive should be done only with divers who know the area well. The dive site is very seasonal, and should be visited during the dry season. During the wet season the rains might reduce the visibility. Most of the fish life consists of small fishes of the Amazon Basin. The bigger ones are wolf fish that can be found hidden near the river margins. Another nice thing is to dive under some rapids as it very interesting to see them from under the water.

Photo

cey-lon:

Electric Eel (Electrophorus electricus)

by National Geo staff

Despite their serpentine appearance, electric eels are not actually eels. Their scientific classification is closer to carp and catfish.

These famous freshwater predators get their name from the enormous electrical charge they can generate to stun prey and dissuade predators. Their bodies contain electric organs with about 6,000 specialized cells called electrocytes that store power like tiny batteries. When threatened or attacking prey, these cells will discharge simultaneously, emitting a burst of at least 600 volts, five times the power of a standard U.S. wall socket.

They live in the murky streams and ponds of the Amazon and Orinoco basins of South America, feeding mainly on fish, but also amphibians and even birds and small mammals. As air-breathers, they must come to the surface frequently. They also have poor eyesight, but can emit a low-level charge, less than 10 volts, which they use like radar to navigate and locate prey…
